In 1993, Tomoaki Nagao, aka DJ Nigo, launched his streetwear brand BAPE, in the Ura-Harajuku district of Tokyo. The name for the company came about as an homage to the 1968 film "Planet of the Apes" and the Japanese idiom "a bathing ape in lukewarm water," which refers to someone who overindulges. In time, some of hip-hop’s biggest stars started shouting out the brand, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the decades, BAPE has partnered with many celebrities and brands from Disney to Pharrell. The adidas Ultra Boost 4.0 BAPE Camo sneaker is one of their most popular collabs. Even with their collaborative projects, the brand has always maintained its signature style, incorporating colorful Harajuku-inspired colorways and confident prints. BAPE also has success with its more simple pieces like their Premium Summer Bag Strapback Hat in Black.
